Adoption is a persuasion job, not a mandate — squads have their own deadlines and you win them over one component at a time. Some legacy services still use an older framework and cannot consume the library yet. Government accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA) are non-negotiable and slow some work down.
This is not a greenfield product role and not a management position. It is not a place to introduce a brand-new framework every quarter — stability and backwards compatibility matter more than novelty.
Someone who cares about accessibility as a first-class concern, enjoys enabling other teams rather than owning product surface, and writes clear documentation.
Ship two accessible components and migrate one squad onto them
Complete an accessibility audit of the current library and publish findings
Establish weekly design-system office hours
About 60% of the week is hands-on: building and maintaining the shared component library in TypeScript and React, pairing with product teams adopting it, and reviewing pull requests. The rest is design-system governance — accessibility audits, documentation, and office hours for the six delivery squads that consume the library.
You join a four-person platform team (two frontend, one designer, one accessibility specialist) reporting to the Head of Delivery. The wider engineering group is 22 people across six citizen-service squads.
